We are incredibly honored and excited to announce the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum will host an exhibit from the Birmngham Civil Rights Institute starting on June 28th and running through September 24th!
The "Remembering 4 Little Girls" exhibition is composed of winning entries in a nationwide high school creative expression contest based on Spike Lee's Oscar (R) nominated documentary about the 1963 Birmingham, Alabama church bombing that took the lives of four young girls.
On August 24, 1998, Home Box Office (HBO) announced winners of its nationwide hight school creative expression contest. Winners, chosen on the basis of originality, style and content, were selected in four categories--art, audio/video, essay and poetry. A distinguished panel of African Americans in the arts, plus an HBO representative, judged the entries. Burrell Communications Group of Chicago oversaw the call for entries and judging process. Four grand-prize winners were leelcted from among 4,125 entries. The four winners each received a $5,000 scholarship and were honored during an awards ceremony at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (Birmingham, Alabama) on September 2, 1998. During the ceremony, HBO presented the Institute with this collection of the top entries.
