Lead Together: Come and celebrate independence for all blind or visually impaired in Alabama. Alabama is hosting its 5th White Cane Day! Exciting news! Tuscaloosa has been chosen to be this year’s site for Alabama’s celebration of White Cane Day! What is White Cane Day? It’s a celebration of the passing of the white cane safety laws and a general celebration of the independence of those who are visually impaired or blind. White Cane Day is a national holiday in its 53rd year. White Cane Day originally celebrated the passing of the different white cane safety laws which allow for those with white canes and guide dogs to cross the street and have the right of way. It quickly turned into a celebration of blindness and visual impairment, showing that just because you have vision loss it doesn’t hinder you from leading a productive and happy life. The white cane with a red tip is a recognizable symbol. We will begin the day with a white cane walk from the River Market at Manderson Landing to Government Plaza. While at Government Plaza there will be live music, food, crafts, games, a beauty pageant, speeches, organizations providing information, and a celebration of the safety laws and independence of blind and visually impaired individuals.
